I saw bloggers rave about this book back when it first came out, but since I am the worst I finally read it a few months ago. I'm kind of disappointed to say that I just wasn't that impressed with this book. If anything it made me super angry.

I knew going into this book that it was going to be super cheesy. I was expecting some Roswell-style cheesy teen romance, which I did get, it just felt way too cheesy! Maybe this is just a testament of my age, but something just didn't quite work for me. Some people might like this book because of the cheese, so I'm not judging, it just wasn't for me. Also the romance does fall into the dreaded insta-love, so I think I had some issues with it there too. I think if you are not sold on the romance between this human and alien, this might not be your thing.

So I mentioned that this book made me angry, and one of the reasons is the crux of the conflict in the novel. I think what annoyed me the most was just how realistic it was, because humans are terrible. So there are a group of people that are anti-alien and set out to make Cara's life miserable since she agreed to the alien exchange program. Even her jerky boyfriend is one of them and then her best friend totally abandons her for these people. That part of the novel really annoyed me! So, yes I can totally see this happening. People are still not accepting of other people because of their skin color, could you imagine people being accepting of an alien species? I think not. So props to Landers for pointing out that this huge flaw in humanity would still exist when it comes to " first contact". This pretty much drives the rest of the plot, and as I read it I just got more and more annoyed with it!

I thought the culture of the L'eihr's was really interesting and I wanted to know more about them. The descriptions of their home world piqued my interest, but we didn't really get to see this at all in the book. We see their home base briefly at the end of the novel. I have a feeling we get more of this later on in the series.

This is another one of those books that I just think is "okay." I didn't hate it, but there were just things about it that didn't work for me. I think the romance was a huge issue for me that I just couldn't get past. I think it is just unfortunately another series I will pass on finishing.

This book had SO much potential. Aliens open up a huge variety of cool things, and cool differences between species. I feel like I would have liked this book better if Aelyx and Cara's relationship was platonic, but Aelyx looked like ET and was actually unique.

Aelyx is the stereotypical "edgy" and "deep" heart throb that teen girls lust after in YA books, but he isn't much deeper than say, Edward Cullen. There are a lot of cool and interesting things that could have been done with the whole "alien" concept, and it is disappointing that the aliens are pretty much exactly like humans, but more sophisticated and condescending (yay for feeling bad about being human!) This book could have easily been about two teenagers from different countries.

When reading this book, I had many questions. Why would earth do an exchange with planet L'eihr if earth had only a vague understanding of them? Why did they exchange high school students and not older, more mature and accomplished people? Why do we NEVER hear about the humans from earth who go to the L'eihr planet... isn't it a little worrisome that there was a student EXCHANGE but the other students are never mentioned? The whole book is filled with these types of questions.

The book concludes with cliche questions that may be profound for the teenage readers of the book, but for us people who are in our 20's, are relatively immature. Are humans good or bad? What is love, and how is love so powerful? Cry me a river, don't hurt me no more.

The book is okay, but I am sure that it would be much more interesting for a 13 year old than for me.
At first, I found it difficult to warm to Cara, our heroine. She’s a self-opinionated, over-achiever who will stop at nothing to win. However, as the story wears on I began to like her more. She’s not afraid to use her feistiness to stand up for Aelyx and the other exchange students even if it means “She’d just set the world record for Fastest Freefalling Social Status.”

Aelyx starts off pretty unlikeable too, although he is an alien so I cut him some slack.

I liked how their relationship grew realistically throughout the book and there were some pretty steamy kissing scenes but that’s as far as it went.

I expected a fluffy high school romance with a flavour of alien. I didn’t expect some keen observations on racism and the darker side of human nature. The population of Earth are soon whipped into a frenzy of hatred and mistrust for the L’eihr. In the wake of the Brexit vote and the recent Trump election campaign, this book depicts some all-too-real examples of how hatred and racism can escalate. Landers’ shows this really well and this sets Alienated apart from the usual forbidden alien/human romance.

Cara turned out to be a strong heroine with some cool lines and the cast of supporting characters are generally believable (excepting Mum and Dad).
