I absolutely adore Halloween and the fall season. So you can imagine my delight in finding a Halloween novel that was actually a decent length. But unfortunately it was really bad. I hate to write a negative review (because heaven knows there's plenty of negativity in this world!) but I want to warn others to not waste their money. The idea for this book was interesting but really bad writing killed it. There was times I literally laughed out loud at how ridiculous it was.Spoiler Warning!
The first chapter is set in 239 AD Ireland involving a King but the conflict involved was confusing. At first it was about a village not having any water because the river ran dry because of an evil sorcerer, then later in the chapter it described a solider being neck deep in river water, what? That's just one example. Long story short I felt I was reading a story written by a elementary school kid rather than a novel, sadly.

An amazing story that goes deep into the roots of halloween and beyond.
It was a different kind of Halloween story. Not the usual jump out of a bush to scare people or blood and guts.
This book takes you on a wild dark uncomfortable ride.
I like how the book blends ancient and modern times along with a cultural blend between Mayan/Mexican culture with Celtic culture. This blend was shaped in the book by catholic references.
I enjoyed the two main characters in the story and how they change as people through their wild and crazy journey.
I was not dissaponted for I thought it was a creepy trip. Not for kids.
Good book for Halloween! Great story filled with characters you can hate or love (or both!). The author follows the "rule of three" pretty much to the letter, making it somewhat predictable, but nonetheless a fun spooky read! The writing was smooth (although a few typos in the first edition) and evenly paced. On a bit of a negative note, the book is largely blasphemous, so if that bothers you don't pick this one up.
This was a fun adventure story. The characters venture into several exciting realms keeping my interest. The end was a bit disappointing and the "love interest" was almost an unnecessary character - if she was going on the adventure with the main character, she shouldn't have needed a purpose to be on adventure. Her "purpose" was a little forced. I did, however, at times feel that I was "underground" with them - it was a vivid picture in my head of where the characters were. Painted nicely.
This book started out great. I loved its plot and original ideas. It mixed lore and mythology creating a world one would see in a disturbing dream. But there is nothing that disappoints me more than an ending that falls flat. *contains spoilers (nothing too revealing)* >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> The book is entitled Gods of the nowhere so am I wrong to think it should actually contain Gods? What this book defines as Gods are nothing more than people who happen to have powers. It would be like calling the x-men Gods among mortals. Fine. I can deal with that sure. The whole book was talking about how special the main character was and how he had a great destiny to stop an ancient evil. What upset me is at the end when it all came to fruition he didn't do anything. My problem was the main character was suppose to be this feared and powerful God but he never used any real power. Even during the final fight he won doing something ANYONE could have done. I had to stop and go "Really?" My last gripe was that in nowhere we meet many lost souls who belong not to heaven or hell, they just exist. Their existence is a very sad and lonely one. He says he is going to help the souls there so I'm fully expecting him to do just that. Nowhere is suppose to be the main characters realm, he IS nowhere so I would think he could manipulate it. Maybe give the people of nowhere an easier life do something to help them but no... he does nothing but threaten them and then leaves saying he doesn't ever want to come back. That's It. This book was not a terrible book but for 10$ i was expecting something much more than this. Now if the price was lowered to like 5 or 6 i would say go for it. I do a lot of reading and i hardly ever see books cost this much and I had seen it before and put it off for that very reason. I know this book got great reviews on many sites and like i said it wasn't bad I just went into thinking it was something it wasn't, that's all. If you want a light Halloween book that's just fun then go ahead, but if you want a Halloween book filled with magic and powerful deities skip it.
I expected a lot from this book judging by all the reviews I've read. I'm not saying it's bad. No, not at all!
The world building (in a loose term) was interesting. It was dark, but nothing frightening. The characters were not two dimensional. There were parts with action, some that I felt dragged on a bit. It's a bit predictable, but I still read through it to find out the ending.
I don't know. Maybe it's just that I expected more that led me to rating this 3 stars. It's interesting enough to keep your attention and make you wonder. But for a title like Gods of The Nowhere--let's just say, it wasn't on the level of epicness I expected.
Do I recommend it? If you're looking for a quick, holiday-themed read, yes. It's enough to get you into the spirit, and for some parts at least, I was entertained. However, if you're looking for a story equivalent to the effect its title gives you, this may not be the right book for you. There's action, but not enough to make you go, "That was amazing!" (It's not going to be as magical as you think it may be.)
Overall, quick, curious read=yes. Expecting a lot (as a Halloween lover)? Probably not.
