Bombay Blues Tanuja Desai Hidier Books

Lyrical -- that's the first word I would use to describe Bombay Blues. The story literally sings. I was a big fan of Born Confused, and the sequel did not disappoint (they so often do, but this lived up to--and in some ways, surpassed--the elegance of the first). Tanuja has such a way with language. Certain passages in this book had me absolutely in awe.

I would recommend Bombay Blues to anyone who is a fan of YA/NA books and who wants an intellectually stimulating work. The book makes demands on the reader and is all the more powerful for it.

Overall, a very enjoyable read. I flipped to the last page and was sorry that it was over.

Bombay Blues Tanuja Desai Hidier Books Reviews

I had no idea what was going on half of the time. I found this really disappointing since I loved Born Confused.
AMAZING! I LOVED Born Confused and did not think I could possibly love Bombay Blues more... Now I cannot decide which one is my favorite!
I was not able to put either one own.
A MUST READ!!!!
I was disappointed, considering that I loved Born Confused! This book got boring after 100 pgs.
I loved Born Confused, but this book could have used a cut of about 200 pages of pointless rambling. The actual story was good, just hard to get to amidst the endless tangents.
Let me start by saying that I am a huge fan of Born Confused. Huge fan. Dimple was relatable, coming of age, full bodied story with insights and entertainment. It was difficult to put down. When I found out that there was a continuation of the story, I just about plotzed. I had to have it. With anticipation, I opened the book and began to read. Slowly, the disappointment filtered in. These were not my beloved characters. This was not my longed for writing style. Born Confused was so enjoyable due to the writing style, somewhat stream of consciousness, relevant, unique, feeling like I was in the know as Hidier threw a long shot and I caught it. But Bombay Blues left me behind. I just couldn't keep up. It was too inner circle, you had to already be in the know to understand many of the references she made. And what happened to these characters? Karsh, through the length of the book, grew farther and farther from who I knew him to be. I couldn't believe it. There were a few Gwyn references thrown in that felt unnecessary and out of place. Tenuja chose a few themes to carry throughout the book, and I found them to be a bit forced and annoying. Don't even get me started on the last two 'chapters' of this book. Maybe if I had viewed this book as unrelated to Born Confused would I have enjoyed it a bit more, but it just didn't live up to my expectations.
I loved "Born Confused" so much that I had been excitedly waiting for the day when the author's next book came out. While this book had some interesting moments, I thought there was too much description that didn't interest me. I've been to India a few times and love reading books that take place there, but I found myself able to put this book down a few times and not rush to pick it back up. I loved the scenes with just Karsh and Dimple.
Because I love/d Born Confused so very much, I was terrified of reading Bombay Blues. I was afraid it would taint BC for me - would take away a story that I've read so many times the book is falling apart, that I've cried over and laughed over, that was with me during a particularly painful part of my life.

I was so wrong. This book is fantastic, and in ways I don't have words for yet, but feel very deeply. On the surface, it is a continuation of the story of one Dimple Lala. Underneath, it is so much more - it is her story, mixed with impeccable prose and characters you love even as they hurt.

This is probably the least useful review, but I couldn't resist throwing my 2 cents on the pile - if you are at all on the fence, read Born Confused, let it sink into your psyche for a bit. And then, definitely, read
Bombay Blues.
