I always worry when I'm boarding a plane and I have a book with me that I have not yet started. Will it be engaging enough to keep me reading for 3+ hours? Or will I wish I'd brought a different book instead? This is exactly the situation I was in last week when I boarded a flight with The Art of Forgetting in my backpack. I'm happy to report that I was sucked into the book from the very first sentence. I couldn't put it down. The book deals with issues that any of us can relate to--especially how friendships can become strained. There are lots of gems throughout the pages of this book, too--gems that are worthy of being printed on those inspirational magnets one often finds at the check out in many book stores. I really enjoyed this book. It was a tale of 2 friends and how an accident changed their whole relationship.
Beautifully written. Created an approachable protagonist who was real, flawed and with whom the reader can easily identify. Conveyed several "messages" without being preachy or overly ambitious.
I enjoyed this and it was a very fast read. A story of two friends and how they and their relationship change when one of them suffers a traumatic brain injury. The author provides a lot of info on traumatic brain injuries without it seeming dry or clinical. This was a much lighter read than I was expecting.
This story was so much more than just a book for me, I was able to relate it to my life as a young adult in many ways. The author did a wonderful job of being descriptful making me visualize the entire story in my head as I read it. My best friend of 8 years actually recommended it to me, saying that it reminded her of our friendship since I was the new girl our sophomore year of high school. Once both of us finished this book, we realized that it reminded us of how blessed we are to have each other, despite our flaws. For me, I have a new outlook on life and the way I handle my daily duties. I've become more thankful of everything I have and have a yearning to take the better step forward each day. This book is a page turner and I definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a good read and reminder of just how beautiful life and friendship is.
I liked the story. I was unsure how it would end, it kept me guessing and thinking which I always appreciate
While addressing the difficult topic of head injury, Camille Pagán adds just the right dose of humor and heartbreak, humanity and levity. A beautiful, complicated story of friendship, and the lengths we go to protect those we love. I look forward to reading more from this author.
The Art of Forgetting may unfortunately apply to this book. Interesting characters, but ultimately too tidily drawn and the plots too efficiently filled out.
