I'm giving up on this series and this author.Maybe I'm not the perfect reader for this series. Maybe you have to be a heavy duty gamer or D&D player to keep all the threads in your head. To me the plot was overly laden with saints, lupi, people, ghosts, changes in direction, different types of magic, tainted ground, sacrifice, sidhe hounds (who seemed like an afterthought), regressed adults, children, shaman healers: after a while I just didn't care. I read to the end, but my heart wasn't in it.
When I began reading this series the plot lines were cleaner, clearer. This book started with one bad guy, then went to an ancient evil, then a taint that drove people mad, then a good witch under a bad compulsion, and lupi under her compulsion. I surrender. White flag. Wilks beat me to the ground with amnesia victims, how that happened, how Lily's own mother became enmeshed and whether it was a shot at Lily or she just happened to be collateral damage. I never quite understood why the amnesia happened. I'm sure it was explained but after wading through the morass of this book I may not have caught that part.
This book was a tangled yarn and I didn't enjoy it. It was well written, because the author did keep track of the incredibly cluttered plot, but nothing made me stop and ponder how wonderful the words worked on the page.

(Original Rating 4.5/5)
Ritual Magic by Eileen Wilks is the 10th book in the World of the Lupi series. Ritual Magic adds to this series deep and intricate storyline and character building, but doesn’t stop there.
Ritual Magic just seems to make it clear how much smarter some people are than others. (I am talking about me here….) Wilks’ ability to layer absolutely amazingly complicated world rules is beyond my level of understanding, when talking about the creation of them. However, Wilks allows her characters to show you as they teach each other about these unknown magics and rules with various gods. If you are looking for a light read, you should pass this one up. It is not hard to understand, but it is also makes you think continuously as you absorb the information. You might also find yourself analysing and thinking about this book long after the last page, if you are anything like me at least.
Rule and Lilly are in the middle of the stink. Lilly’s mother has fallen to mind woo-woo and has lost all of her memory, reverting her back to a 12 year old. I expected this aspect to be a bit bla, but I was shocked at how much it added to the characters. Getting such a unique insight into such a rigid character really makes you think. You start to understand her reasoning and behaviours in a way you didn’t think would be possible. So many times in our own lives we only see the person in front of us and fail to understand the why and how of the final product.
One thing that truly stands out in this series (and I can only think of one other that truly does this as well) is that Lilly and Rule are in real relationship. This is not romance. They have personal struggles and relationship struggles and I think it makes for a beautiful read. Life is not perfect. They are not perfect. Everyday is a struggle and a fight to keep those they love safe and still remain whole. What happens when you start to question your motivation because of outside influences? Could you tell if your soul was corrupted?
If you love fascinating stories with diverse characters, I would certainly recommend this series! I would say..start at the beginning! It is totally worth it!

Thoughts To be honest, I dragged my heels when it came to getting this book....and then dragged them some more when it came to actually reading it. I absolutely loved this series in the beginning, but it has become one of those series that has started to lose its spark for me. Part of me feverently hoped that this would be the book that sets it back on track....and yet another dreaded it because I feared it would be the final straw for me with the series. Unfortunately, it seems to be the latter for me.
With most other series, it usually comes down to just the whole plotline/story just not living up to the spectacular standards set by the previous books. What makes this series a bit odd for me is instead it seems to be a loss of the integral part of the characters - now, in the tenth book, I honestly have forgotten why I loved these characters so much. It doesn't even seem like I am even reading about the same people anymore. And that is truly a sad state of affairs since the characters used to be so vibrant. The story is still a good one - but I miss the connection that used to exist for these characters - for example, Lily and Rule could almost be strangers they seem so different from who they used to be. Not to mention their real, true interactions are few and far between. It's almost like now that they are together romantically, the author doesn't know how to write them anymore.
I doubt I can handle reading another book in this series - it just reminds me of what is missing from those amazing books in the beginning.
I'm giving up on this series and this author.
